We do not believe in assigning excessive homework. The homework that is assigned is meaningful and, for the average student, manageable. We feel it is important that it is completed as assigned so that students learn a sense of accountability. Homework is due every morning at 8:30am, Monday – Friday. Your support and help is deeply appreciated.
SUMMER HOMEWORK: All returning students were assigned review work to be completed over the summer. Students were expected to bring in their completed assignments on the first day of school. Should this homework not have been completed, students must complete it by the end of the first week. If not completed by the Monday of week two, students will be sent to study hall at recess until it is completed. Parents will be notified on that day.
MATH: Students will be given a math folder for homework.
Work should be organized, tidy, and show all solving steps.
If a student misses a math homework assignment, he/she will receive a “No Homework” that will need a parent’s signature.
After the third “No Homework”, the teacher will notify the parents. At this point, we would love your support and/or input in setting up a plan if it is deemed necessary.
If there are three more “No Homeworks” after this, a meeting will be scheduled with teacher, student and parent.
Each time a student comes to school without an assignment completed, he/she will go to study hall during recess to complete it.
The expectation is that this homework is a review of math concepts they have learned in class.
READING: Students are to read at least 20 minutes per night (no comic books or graphic novels unless teacher approved). Reading homework may include reading for research projects or second semester projects. Should the reading or assignments not be completed, students will work on them in study hall. If there are recurring times when this is not completed, the teacher will contact the parent.
PARENT SIGNATURES: Both the reading log and math lesson should be reviewed by parents and signed after corrections are made by the student. Uncorrected homework can be worked on in study hall.
BOOK TALKS: Students are REQUIRED to READ 1 book per month AND complete a BOOK TALK. Once a student completes a book, they will present a book talk the last Friday of every month. In addition to completing the book talk graphic organizer, rough draft and final draft, students are required to give a short (less than 5 minute) presentation on their book. Most book talks follow a generic book talk form. Though some months will have a different form - these are indicated by the symbol **
Following is the list of the genres students are required to read each month. Please refer to this to help support your child in completing their required monthly book talks.
August: Ancient Civilization Myths (a lesson and stories will be provided for this month)**
September: Traditional Literature / Classics
October: Mystery
November: biography/autobiography of someone who made an impact in the world (person should be the same as the Great Lives Fair)**
LONG-TERM PROJECTS: Long term projects are broken down into steps, each with its own due date and corresponding point values. Meeting these due dates are essential for the completion of the project since it is completed over time. Should a student miss one of the due dates, parents will be notified via email. Points will be deducted for each missed due date. This year’s end project is the Art Fair - The packet explaining requirements and expectations will be sent home in October.
OPTIONAL: Students are encouraged to practice their typing skills weekly, although this is not required. Typing.com is a free website that has a great program to start teaching children to type.
